Truck Kills Pedestrian on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway
An unidentified man was killed on Wednesday after being hit by a truck near the OPIC area of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
According to eyewitnesses who spoke with a reporter at the scene, the elderly man was attempting to cross the expressway along the Lagos-bound section near OPIC when the truck struck him.
The accident occurred shortly before 1 p.m. and caused some disruption to traffic as motorists slowed down while passing the scene.
The truck driver reportedly fled immediately after the crash.
Eyewitness Calls for Pedestrian Bridge
An eyewitness identified as Nojeem said the victim was attempting to cross the busy highway when the truck hit him.
He said:
“He wanted to cross. The truck hit him, knocked him down and ran over him before speeding away. This is a road used by many people, and we have lost many lives here.
“That is why the government should provide a pedestrian bridge to prevent avoidable loss of lives.”
The reporter who visited the scene said the victim’s body was still lying on the expressway shortly after 2 p.m.
The incident reportedly attracted the attention of traffic officials and other security personnel who moved in to help manage the situation.
TRACE, Amotekun Control Traffic
The Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE) confirmed the accident.
Its spokesperson, Babatunde Akinbiyi, said TRACE officials and members of the Amotekun Corps were deployed to the scene to control traffic and prevent further disruption.
Akinbiyi said:
“A crash occurred at OPIC, on the Lagos-bound section of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
“The incident affected traffic, but TRACE and AMOTEKUN officials were there to control the situation, while efforts were ongoing to remove the body from the road.”
According to him, traffic management officers remained at the location while arrangements were made to evacuate the victim.
Body Taken to Teaching Hospital
Providing a further update at about 6 p.m., Akinbiyi said the body had been removed from the expressway.
He explained that officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) transported the remains to Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital, Sagamu.
He also confirmed that the affected section of the expressway had been cleared and that normal vehicular movement had resumed.
Residents Renew Call for Pedestrian Bridge
The latest fatal accident has once again raised concerns about pedestrian safety along the busy section of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
The area has reportedly witnessed several accidents involving pedestrians, with residents and road users repeatedly calling on the government to construct a pedestrian bridge.
They argue that providing a safe crossing point would reduce the need for pedestrians to cross the heavily trafficked expressway and help prevent further avoidable deaths.
The latest incident has therefore renewed calls for authorities to address pedestrian safety around the OPIC area, particularly as the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway remains one of the busiest routes connecting Lagos and Ogun State.
