The Federal Government has announced a major intervention aimed at reducing one of the biggest barriers to digital education in Nigeria, with about five million students expected to receive free daily access to approved educational websites and digital learning platforms from October 1, 2026.

Under the new Zero-Rated Access to Educational Platforms and Content initiative, eligible students will receive up to 100 megabytes of sponsored data every day for accessing approved educational resources without paying the normal data charges.

The initiative was formally launched in Abuja on Thursday, September 10, 2026, by the Federal Ministry of Education in collaboration with the Nigerian Communications Commission and telecommunications operators.

The government said the programme is designed to ensure that the cost of internet connectivity does not prevent Nigerian students from accessing educational materials, online courses, digital classrooms and other approved learning resources.

Education Minister Dr Tunji Alausa said the programme would initially target students in public senior secondary schools and tertiary institutions, with the possibility of extending the initiative to other categories of learners as implementation develops.

Free educational data to begin October 1
