The latest figure represents approximately 70 per cent implementation of the commitments made by operators to expand coverage, increase network capacity and improve the quality of telecommunications services for millions of Nigerians.
The Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, disclosed the development following the commission's 110th Board Meeting, held on September 9, 2026.
The progress represents a significant increase from the approximately 5,000 sites that had been reported at the commission's previous board meeting.
However, while the expansion represents encouraging progress, the regulator has warned that Nigeria's telecommunications infrastructure is facing another serious challenge: damage to fibre-optic cables.
According to the commission, fibre cuts contributed to a sharp increase in network disruptions during June, highlighting the need for Nigeria to protect existing telecommunications infrastructure while continuing to build new network capacity.
