The Benue State Police Command has clarified the circumstances surrounding the disappearance of Dr Jonah Ogbaji, the Medical Director of Multicare Hospital in Makurdi, saying the doctor was arrested by police operatives from Abuja and was not abducted as initially reported.
The clarification followed widespread reports that Ogbaji had been taken away from his hospital in Makurdi by armed men on Wednesday night, September 23, while he was attending to patients.
The incident initially generated concern among the doctor's family, colleagues and residents because those who took him away reportedly presented themselves as security personnel, while his whereabouts were not immediately known.
According to the Benue State Police Command, however, the doctor was arrested by operatives of the Special Tactical Squad attached to the Force Intelligence Department in Abuja.
The command said the arrest was connected to an ongoing investigation but did not disclose the nature of the investigation or the allegations, if any, being examined against the medical director.
The police clarification effectively changed the description of the incident from a suspected abduction to a police arrest. That distinction is important because the two situations involve very different legal and investigative circumstances.
