TEMs, RUNTOWN HEADLINE SPOTIFY'S INVITATION-ONLY LAGOS SHOWCASE IN TWO-NIGHT MUSIC EVENT

By Iroyin Yoruba Television News Desk

Nigerian music stars Tems and Runtown have headlined a two-night Spotify showcase in Lagos, performing for selected Premium listeners in an intimate in-the-round setting that marked a departure from conventional concert formats.

The Spotify Surround Sound showcase took place at Livespot in Lagos on 28 and 29 September 2026, with Tems performing on the first night and Runtown closing the event on the second night.

The event was not open to public ticket sales. Instead, selected Spotify Premium subscribers were invited directly based on their listening behaviour on the platform, according to Spotify's Format and Video Strategy Lead, Rifumo Mdaka.

How the Showcase Was Structured

The Surround Sound series was launched from Sub-Saharan Africa as a live performance format designed to place artistes and fans closer together. Performances were staged in an in-the-round configuration, allowing the audience to experience the music from close range.

Mdaka said the approach was intended to create a more personal artist-fan experience while maintaining a setting suitable for high-quality performance filming. The shows were captured as full-length music films, with Spotify announcing that they will be released as "Surround Sound presents Tems" and "Surround Sound presents Runtown".

The invitation-only model meant that the audience comprised listeners whose engagement with Tems and Runtown's music had already been reflected in their Spotify listening data. Spotify is expected to announce release dates for both music films at a later stage.

Tems' Performance: A Career Retrospective

Tems took the stage on the first night, drawing from different stages of her career for a set that moved between early recordings and more recent releases.

The Grammy-winning singer performed songs from her debut EP, "For Broken Ears," including "Ice T" and "Damages," alongside earlier releases such as "Mr Rebel" and "Try Me".

She also performed later songs including "Love Me JeJe" and "What You Need," giving the audience a musical journey through several chapters of her career. The intimate setting allowed Tems to engage directly with the audience, with the singer inviting fans to sing along during the performance.

Runtown's Return to the Stage

The second night belonged to Runtown, who brought his catalogue of Afrobeats hits to the Lagos stage.

Runtown opened his set with "Lagos to Kampala" and "Gallardo" before performing "For Life," "International Badman Killa," "Unleash" and "Kini Issue".

His performance of "Mad Over You" became one of the night's notable moments, with the audience singing along as the artiste delivered the popular track. Runtown returned to the song for a second performance to close the show, extending the interaction between the singer and the audience.

The performance carried a personal significance for Runtown, who revealed ahead of the show that it marked his first performance with his band in 10 years. The singer said he was looking forward to reconnecting with his fans through the experience.

Context: Spotify's Growing Presence in Nigeria

The Lagos showcase reflects Spotify's expanding engagement with Nigeria's music market, one of the platform's key growth regions in Africa. Nigeria's music industry has gained global prominence through Afrobeats and its associated genres, with artistes such as Tems, Burna Boy, Wizkid and Davido achieving international recognition.

The Surround Sound format represents an effort by Spotify to move beyond conventional streaming by creating physical experiences around the music its listeners consume on the platform. The invitation-only approach also serves as a loyalty mechanism, rewarding engaged subscribers with access to exclusive events.

This is not the first time Spotify has invested in Nigerian live music experiences. The platform has previously hosted events and showcases in Lagos, positioning itself alongside other streaming services and music companies competing for a share of Nigeria's growing digital music audience.

The involvement of Livespot, a Lagos-based entertainment company, as the venue partner also highlights the infrastructure that has developed around Nigeria's live music sector in recent years. Lagos has become a hub for concerts, showcases and music festivals, attracting both local and international investment.

The Artistes' Profiles

Tems, whose real name is Temilade Openiyi, has become one of Nigeria's most internationally recognised musical exports. Her debut EP "For Broken Ears" (2020) established her as a distinctive voice in alternative R&B and Afrobeats. She has since collaborated with international artistes including Drake, Future and Beyoncé, and won a Grammy Award for Best Melodic Rap Performance for her contribution to Future's "Wait for U" in 2023.

Her performance at the Spotify showcase drew from across her catalogue, demonstrating the range that has made her a sought-after collaborator and a headline act in her own right.

Runtown, whose real name is Douglas Agu, rose to prominence in the mid-2010s with hits including "Gallardo" featuring Davido and "Mad Over You," which became one of the defining Afrobeats tracks of its era. His career has spanned multiple labels and independent releases, and his return to performing with a full band after a decade marked a significant moment for both the artiste and his fans.

What This Means for Nigeria's Live Music Scene

The Spotify showcase adds to a busy period for Nigerian live music. The event was held on the same weekend as the record-breaking "Black Market" film screening at Tafawa Balewa Square, which drew over 51,000 attendees and set a Guinness World Record for the largest attendance at a film screening. Together, the two events illustrate the scale of audiences that Nigerian creative productions can attract when organisers invest in large-scale, well-publicised events.

For Spotify, the Lagos showcase represents a continued bet on Nigeria as a market where streaming adoption and live music demand are both growing. The invitation-only model also gives the platform a way to differentiate its offerings from competitors in a crowded streaming landscape.

What Happens Next

Spotify is expected to release the two Surround Sound films featuring Tems and Runtown at a later date, though no timeline has been announced. The platform has not disclosed whether the Surround Sound series will return to Lagos or expand to other Nigerian cities.

Neither Tems nor Runtown has announced immediate follow-up performances in Nigeria. Tems continues to tour internationally, while Runtown's return to band performances may signal further live dates in the coming months.

What Remains Unclear

Several questions remain unanswered. Spotify has not disclosed the number of attendees at the two Lagos shows, nor has it released details about how listeners were selected for invitations. The specific criteria used to identify Premium subscribers for the event have not been made public.

It is also unclear whether the Surround Sound series will become a recurring fixture in Nigeria or whether the Lagos showcase was a one-off event. The platform has not announced plans for similar showcases in other African markets.

The commercial performance of the music films upon release will be a key indicator of whether the format achieves its stated goal of bridging streaming and live experiences. For now, the Lagos showcase stands as a confirmed event that brought two established Nigerian artistes together with a select audience in an intimate, filmed setting.
