Nigerian troops operating under Operation Hadin Kai have foiled an attempted infiltration by Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters at a military Forward Operating Base in Kawuri, Konduga Local Government Area of Borno State.
The incident occurred on September 25, when troops stationed at the base detected the movement of suspected ISWAP fighters approaching the military position at about 11 p.m.
The troops responded to the movement and engaged the attackers in a gun battle. The confrontation forced the fighters to withdraw towards the Yuwe axis, according to security reports on the operation.
The military subsequently conducted an exploitation operation along the route believed to have been used by the fleeing fighters. During the operation, troops recovered several items reportedly abandoned during the withdrawal.
The recovered items included weapons, suspected cannabis sativa, Tramadol tablets, cigarette butts and a muffler. The items were taken into military custody for further investigation and intelligence exploitation.
ATTACKERS DETECTED APPROACHING THE BASE
The attempted infiltration took place at a time when military formations across Borno State remain on heightened alert because of continued terrorist activity in parts of the North-East.
According to information on the Kawuri operation, troops detected the advancing fighters before they could reach the military base.
The early detection allowed soldiers to respond before the attackers could establish a position around the Forward Operating Base.
The confrontation developed into a gun battle, after which the suspected terrorists retreated from the area.
Security reports said an unconfirmed number of the attackers were neutralised during the engagement. The available reports did not provide a verified figure for casualties among the ISWAP fighters.
The surviving attackers reportedly withdrew towards Yuwe, prompting troops to conduct a follow-up operation the following morning.
TROOPS SEARCH WITHDRAWAL ROUTE
At about 7:10 a.m. on September 26, soldiers conducted an exploitation operation along the route reportedly taken by the fleeing fighters.
Such follow-up operations are important because armed groups may abandon weapons, equipment or other material while withdrawing from an area after an unsuccessful attack.
During the search, troops recovered weapons and several other items.
The presence of suspected cannabis sativa and Tramadol among the recovered materials is also being treated as part of the intelligence value of the operation. Investigators can examine such items alongside other recovered materials to determine whether they can provide information about the activities, movements or supply networks of the attackers.
The recovered items have remained in military custody for further examination.
WHAT THE OPERATION REVEALS
The incident demonstrates the continuing security challenge facing military positions in Borno, where terrorist groups have repeatedly attempted to attack security formations and establish freedom of movement in remote areas.
Forward Operating Bases are established to extend military presence into locations that may otherwise be difficult to patrol regularly.
Their location also means they can become targets for armed groups seeking to test military defences or gain access to weapons, equipment and strategic routes.
The attempted attack on Kawuri therefore required troops to maintain vigilance around the base and respond quickly when suspicious movement was detected.
The fact that the attackers were forced to withdraw before successfully infiltrating the position meant that the military retained control of the base.
CONTINUED PRESSURE ON TERRORIST NETWORKS
Operation Hadin Kai has continued to conduct operations against Boko Haram and ISWAP elements across the North-East.
The operations involve ground patrols, intelligence gathering and efforts to disrupt terrorist movements and logistics.
In Borno, the security environment is complicated by the presence of different armed groups and by competition over territory and access to resources.
Military operations are therefore not limited to responding to direct attacks. Troops also seek to prevent terrorist groups from establishing camps, moving personnel and supplies, or gaining access to vulnerable communities.
The Kawuri incident falls within this wider security effort.
By detecting the fighters before they reached the base and pursuing their withdrawal route, troops were able to turn an attempted attack into an opportunity to recover additional intelligence and equipment.
IMPORTANCE OF INTELLIGENCE
The early detection of the approaching fighters was a significant part of the operation.
Military bases in areas affected by insurgency require information about possible movements around their perimeter. Intelligence can provide troops with an opportunity to prepare for an attack before armed groups reach their intended target.
The Kawuri operation illustrates how information, surveillance and the readiness of troops can work together during an attempted infiltration.
Once the attackers were identified, soldiers were able to engage them and prevent them from entering the base.
The subsequent recovery operation also allowed troops to collect items that could potentially assist further investigations.
RECOVERED ITEMS TO UNDERGO INVESTIGATION
The materials recovered along the withdrawal route have been taken into military custody.
Their significance will depend on what investigators are able to establish from them.
Weapons can potentially provide information about the type of equipment available to the attackers, while personal or other discarded materials may provide clues about movements or links to other locations.
The recovered drugs and other items could also form part of the intelligence picture surrounding the group.
However, the recovery of an item at an abandoned location does not by itself establish who owned it or how it came to be there. Those connections would need to be established through further investigation.
NO CONFIRMED CASUALTY FIGURE FOR ATTACKERS
Reports on the operation said an unconfirmed number of terrorists were neutralised during the gun battle.
The lack of a confirmed figure means a specific casualty number cannot responsibly be stated as established fact.
What is clear from the available account is that the attackers withdrew from the area after troops engaged them.
The military subsequently searched the withdrawal route and recovered weapons and other items believed to have been abandoned by the fleeing fighters.
The operation therefore produced a defensive success for the troops without a verified public casualty figure for the attackers.
SECURITY CHALLENGES REMAIN
Despite the successful response at Kawuri, the incident underscores that terrorist groups continue to seek opportunities to test military positions in the North-East.
Borno has experienced years of conflict involving Boko Haram and ISWAP, resulting in deaths, displacement and disruption to economic and social activity.
The continued presence of armed groups means military formations must remain prepared for attacks even when there has been no immediate warning of an assault.
For communities around military positions, sustained security operations are also important because attacks on bases can affect the wider security environment.
An attempted infiltration that is stopped before reaching a military position can prevent a larger confrontation and reduce the possibility of weapons or equipment being seized.
FOLLOW-UP OPERATIONS
Following the Kawuri incident, the continued monitoring of the area remains important.
The attackers who withdrew from the base may attempt to regroup or move to another location. Security agencies therefore have an interest in tracking movements around the Yuwe axis and other areas connected to the incident.
The items recovered during the exploitation operation could also contribute to the intelligence picture.
Military investigators can compare the recovered materials with information from other operations to determine whether there are links between separate terrorist activities.
BROADER COUNTER-INSURGENCY EFFORT
The Kawuri operation forms part of a broader military campaign aimed at reducing the ability of terrorist groups to operate in Borno and other parts of the North-East.
Counter-insurgency operations require more than direct engagement with armed fighters. They also involve intelligence gathering, protection of military positions, disruption of logistics, recovery of weapons and efforts to prevent terrorist groups from moving freely between locations.
The attempted infiltration at Kawuri shows why military bases remain important points of defence.
When troops maintain control of their positions and prevent attackers from breaching them, terrorist groups face greater difficulty in expanding their operations.
At the same time, continued vigilance remains necessary because a failed attack does not necessarily mean that the threat has disappeared.
MILITARY MAINTAINS VIGILANCE
The attempted ISWAP infiltration of the Kawuri Forward Operating Base ended with the attackers withdrawing from the area after troops engaged them.
The subsequent search produced weapons and other materials that have been placed in military custody for further investigation.
The incident demonstrates the importance of early detection, rapid response and follow-up operations in areas affected by terrorism.
For residents of Borno, the continuing military presence remains an important part of efforts to protect communities and maintain access to roads and settlements affected by insecurity.
The Nigerian military is expected to continue operations under Operation Hadin Kai as security forces work to disrupt terrorist movements and prevent attacks on military positions and civilian communities.
For now, the Kawuri incident remains another example of the continuing contest between Nigerian security forces and terrorist groups operating in the North-East, with troops maintaining control of the military base after preventing the attempted infiltration.
