The Borno State Police Command has arrested and prosecuted five protesters in Maiduguri over allegations including inciting public disturbance, breach of public peace, thuggery and possession of suspected illicit drugs.
The arrests have generated a dispute over the circumstances surrounding the detention of the protesters, with opposition voices raising concerns about possible intimidation while the police maintain that the suspects were arrested because of alleged criminal conduct.
POLICE EXPLAIN REASON FOR ARREST
The police said the five suspects were apprehended during a routine township patrol in Maiduguri.
According to the command, officers encountered the individuals allegedly engaging in conduct capable of causing public disturbance. The police said items recovered from the suspects included 15 wraps of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp, 100 tablets suspected to be D5, a shisha pot and a pair of scissors.
Two T-shirts bearing the inscription “Tinubu Must Go” were also reportedly recovered.
The command said the suspects were subsequently taken through the appropriate legal process over the allegations against them.
POLICE REJECT INTIMIDATION ALLEGATION
The arrests have attracted political reactions because of the slogans reportedly displayed on the T-shirts.
Opposition voices have questioned whether the protesters were targeted because of their political expression. The police, however, rejected the allegation that the arrests were politically motivated.
The command maintained that the case was based on alleged offences observed during the patrol and the items reportedly found in the suspects' possession.
The distinction is important because peaceful expression and public-order offences are separate legal questions. Authorities must establish through due process whether the suspects committed the offences alleged against them.
PUBLIC ORDER AND PROTEST RIGHTS
The incident has again highlighted the balance security agencies must maintain between public safety and citizens' rights to peaceful expression.
Nigeria's security agencies are responsible for preventing violence, disorder and criminal activity. At the same time, arrests connected to demonstrations or political expression can attract public scrutiny, particularly where protesters claim that enforcement action is being used to suppress dissent.
The police position is that the suspects were not arrested simply for displaying political messages but because officers allege that they were involved in conduct capable of causing public disturbance and were found with items suspected to be illicit drugs.
Those allegations remain matters for the relevant legal process.
WHY THE CASE MATTERS
The development comes against the background of the wider security challenges facing Borno State.
Maiduguri and other parts of Borno have experienced years of terrorism-related violence, making public order and community security particularly sensitive issues.
For security agencies, maintaining calm in the state requires preventing criminal activity while ensuring that enforcement actions remain within the law.
For residents, the handling of such cases can also influence public confidence in the police and other security institutions.
WHAT HAPPENS NEXT
The legal proceedings involving the five suspects will determine how the allegations against them are handled.
The police are expected to continue providing security across Maiduguri and other parts of Borno State, while authorities will have to balance public-order enforcement with the rights of residents and protesters.
The case demonstrates why transparent procedures and clearly established evidence are important whenever arrests arise from demonstrations or politically sensitive situations.
As the matter progresses, the key issues will be whether the allegations against the suspects can be established through due process and whether their legal and constitutional rights are fully respected.
