BENIN CITY, NIGERIA — October 24, 2026
The Edo State Police Command has reported the recovery of 350 rounds of ammunition from a commercial passenger bus on the Benin–Lagos Road and the arrest of two transport company officials in connection with the discovery. In a separate investigation, police also arrested four suspects allegedly linked to a robbery in which property valued at more than ₦400 million was stolen and a security guard was killed.
Commissioner of Police Patrick Daaor disclosed the developments during a briefing in Benin City on October 21. The arrests and recoveries were reported publicly on October 22.
In the ammunition case, police said officers conducting stop-and-search operations intercepted a Toyota Ultra bus belonging to GUO Transport Company on October 20.
A search of the vehicle reportedly uncovered 100 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition for AK-47 rifles, 50 rounds of 7.65mm ammunition and 200 rounds of 9mm ammunition. Officers also recovered three bags containing substances suspected to be cannabis.
The driver, Godwin Emeka, 37, and the company’s operational manager, Enearu Louis, 40, were arrested in connection with the discovery.
Police have not publicly established where the ammunition originated, who owned it, its intended destination or whether the two men knew what was being transported. Their arrests do not by themselves establish criminal responsibility, and further investigation is required to determine the circumstances surrounding the consignment.
Four arrested over deadly Auchi robbery
In a separate case, the command announced the arrest of four men allegedly connected to the July 12 robbery at Paparazzi Communication Complex in Auchi, Etsako West Local Government Area.
Police said the robbery resulted in the death of the security guard on duty and the theft of property valued at more than ₦400 million.
The suspects were identified as Hamisu Nuhu, 34, from Jattu, whom police described as the alleged mastermind, alongside Suleiman Rabiu, Hussaini Rabiu and Ibrahim Haruna.
The command said the arrests followed investigative work by officers in the Auchi area. However, police did not identify the specific items allegedly stolen or confirm that the stolen property had been recovered.
The case remains an allegation pending further investigation and any subsequent court proceedings. The police announcement did not provide details of pleas or court appearances by the four suspects.
Other investigations
The briefing also covered arrests in separate murder, alleged sexual-offence, cult-related and motorcycle-theft investigations. These cases were distinct from the ammunition interception and the Auchi robbery.
Police said investigations were continuing and that suspects would be charged as appropriate after the relevant inquiries were concluded.
The developments highlight the range of criminal investigations being handled by the Edo command, from violent robbery to the movement of potentially dangerous materials on major transport routes.
The ammunition recovery raises questions about the source and intended use of the rounds, but authorities have not publicly connected the consignment to any particular attack or criminal organisation. Establishing that connection, if one exists, will require evidence from the ongoing investigation.
For the Auchi robbery, the arrests represent progress in a case involving a reported fatality and substantial property losses. The next important steps will be the presentation of evidence, recovery of stolen assets where possible, and the determination of the suspects’ responsibility through the justice system.
