Veteran Afrobeat musician Femi Kuti has recalled how Afrobeats star Davido used to queue at the entrance of the New Afrika Shrine in Lagos, hoping to gain entry for Felabration before becoming one of Nigeria’s biggest music stars.
Femi shared the anecdote while discussing the growth of Felabration, the annual festival celebrating the life and musical legacy of his father, Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo-Kuti.
According to Femi, Davido would stand at the gate and repeatedly ask to be allowed inside.
“Davido used to queue at the gate of the New African Shrine (for Felabration) and shout at the gate, ‘Can I come, can I come in?’” Femi said, as reported by entertainment media.
The story offers a glimpse into Davido’s earlier experiences at the venue before his rise to international prominence.
Davido responds to Femi Kuti’s recollection
Davido appeared to acknowledge Femi’s account after sharing the statement on his Instagram Story with the word “Factos”.
His response suggested that he agreed with the veteran musician’s recollection, although the brief post did not provide further details about when the visits took place.
The exchange attracted attention because it contrasted Davido’s reported experience of waiting for entry with his present status as a major figure in African popular music.
Felabration celebrates Fela’s musical legacy
Felabration is an annual music and cultural festival held in honour of Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, whose music and political activism helped shape the development of Afrobeat.
The 2026 edition was scheduled to run from October 12 to October 18, bringing musicians and audiences together to celebrate his influence and continuing legacy.
Femi Kuti, who has continued his father’s musical tradition through his own performances and recordings, remains closely associated with the festival and the New Afrika Shrine.
The recollection about Davido adds a personal anecdote to the festival’s wider story, illustrating how the Shrine has been a gathering place for music fans and performers across different generations.
For Davido, the account connects an earlier chapter of his life with his current position in the music industry. For Felabration, it provides another example of the festival’s place in Nigeria’s evolving music culture.
Iroyin Yoruba Television will continue to follow developments in Nigeria’s music and entertainment industry.
