IGBOKODA RESIDENTS SEEK URGENT CLEAN-UP AND SAFE WATER AFTER NAF AIRCRAFT CRASH

By Iroyin Yoruba Television

Residents of Igbokoda in Ondo State have appealed for urgent recovery operations and environmental intervention following a Nigerian Air Force aircraft crash that left the community facing an offensive smell and concerns about possible water contamination.

The ATR-42 aircraft, identified as NAF 931, crashed into a swamp near the Air Force Forward Operating Base in Igbokoda, Ilaje Local Government Area, on October 5, 2026. The aircraft was travelling from Benin City in Edo State to Lagos on a routine mission. All 25 people on board—five crew members and 20 passengers—were reported dead.

More than a week after the incident, residents said the smell from the crash site was affecting nearby homes and raised concerns about decomposing human remains and possible aviation-fuel pollution in the surrounding water.

Residents call for recovery and environmental assessment

The Olu of Igbokoda, Oba Afolabi Odidiomo, appealed to the Federal Government, the Ondo State Government and the Nigerian Air Force to accelerate recovery efforts and address the community’s concerns.

He said the offensive smell had spread beyond the immediate crash site and that residents were worried about the safety of water used for domestic activities.

Community members also called for the removal of remaining human remains and aircraft debris, an assessment of possible fuel contamination and the provision of safe drinking water while recovery and environmental work continued.

The concerns are particularly significant because the river and surrounding waterways support livelihoods in Igbokoda and neighbouring communities. However, the extent of any contamination requires proper environmental assessment; residents’ reports alone do not establish the level of pollution or the presence of a disease outbreak.

Ondo government orders fumigation and emergency support

In a development reported on October 14, the Ondo State Government ordered fumigation of the river associated with the crash site following complaints about the smell.

Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa also directed the relevant ministries to distribute nose masks and other essential health kits to residents as a precaution.

The governor instructed the Ilaje Local Government Area to arrange water tankers for the supply of potable water if assessments determine that the river is severely polluted and unsuitable for use. The arrangement is intended to remain in place pending a lasting response to any confirmed pollution.

The state government said it would continue supporting the Nigerian Air Force’s recovery efforts while prioritising residents’ welfare and safety.

These measures represent a response to reported concerns, but they should not be mistaken for confirmation that the river has been fully assessed, decontaminated or declared safe. Residents need clear information about water-quality testing, the results of environmental assessments and when normal water use can safely resume.

Recovery operations and crash investigation

Recovery work has been complicated by the swampy terrain and the aircraft’s submersion in water. The Nigerian Air Force has continued search and recovery efforts and established a 12-member board to investigate the circumstances of the crash.

The investigation is separate from the immediate need to address residents’ environmental concerns. Authorities must establish the cause of the crash through the formal investigation while also communicating what is known about recovery progress and any risks to the surrounding community.

As of October 14, reports indicated that recovery operations and assessments were continuing. The status of recovered remains, wreckage and any identified contaminants should be confirmed through subsequent official updates rather than assumed.

Residents need clear information and sustained support

For Igbokoda residents, the incident has created concerns extending beyond the loss of life to the safety of their environment and access to clean water.

The immediate priorities are to complete recovery operations as safely as possible, assess and address any confirmed contamination, provide reliable potable water where needed and communicate findings to the community.

The effectiveness of the response will depend on the timely release of assessment results, the implementation of any necessary clean-up measures and continued support for affected residents.

Iroyin Yoruba Television will continue to follow developments in the recovery operation, the aircraft-crash investigation and the authorities’ response to environmental and public-health concerns in Igbokoda.
