TARABA GOVERNOR KEFAS DECLARES STATE’S SUPPORT FOR TINUBU AND APC AHEAD OF 2027

By Iroyin Yoruba Television

Taraba State Governor Agbu Kefas has declared that the people of Taraba State are fully behind President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress ahead of the 2027 general elections, signalling another major political development in the continuing realignment of Nigerian politicians ahead of the next presidential contest.

Kefas made the declaration on Wednesday, October 7, shortly after meeting President Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

The governor, who described himself as the leader of the APC in Taraba State, said the people of the state had benefited from interventions by the Federal Government and were prepared to support the President at the next election.

His statement represents a significant political position in a state where the Peoples Democratic Party has traditionally maintained substantial political influence.

Kefas said he visited the Presidential Villa to welcome Tinubu back to Abuja following the President's overseas trip and to express condolences over the recent Nigerian Air Force aircraft crash in Ondo State.

The meeting, however, also provided an opportunity for the governor to discuss political developments and the relationship between Taraba State and the Federal Government.

Speaking to journalists after the meeting, Kefas said he believed the Federal Government's interventions in Taraba had strengthened public confidence in the Tinubu administration.

He specifically pointed to areas including security, education, healthcare and infrastructure as areas where he said residents had seen the impact of federal government support.

The governor consequently expressed confidence that the state would vote for Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election.

Kefas's declaration is politically important because the governor only recently became aligned with the APC after leaving the opposition People's Democratic Party.

His movement into the ruling party has been part of a broader pattern of political realignment ahead of the 2027 elections, with politicians across the country changing political platforms and forming new alliances.

The governor's latest comments indicate that his political alignment with the APC is now being translated into an electoral commitment at the state level.

By declaring that Taraba is fully behind Tinubu, Kefas is also positioning the state within the President's growing campaign network ahead of the next presidential election.

The governor said his position was based on his assessment of the impact of Federal Government programmes on people in the state.

He cited security interventions as one of the areas in which he believed the Federal Government had made an impact.

Security remains an important issue for Taraba, which shares borders with several states and contains large rural communities where access to government services and infrastructure can be challenging.

For the governor, federal support in such areas provides an important basis for cooperation between the state and the central government.

Education was another area mentioned by Kefas.

The Federal Government has introduced several programmes and interventions aimed at expanding access to education, supporting students and strengthening educational infrastructure.

The governor argued that residents had benefited from such interventions.

Healthcare was also identified as an area where federal programmes had made an impact.

Healthcare delivery remains a major concern across many Nigerian states, particularly in rural areas where access to specialist services and adequately equipped facilities can be limited.

Infrastructure was the fourth major area highlighted by the governor.

Federal infrastructure projects can have a significant effect on state economies by improving road connections, transportation, commerce and access to government services.

Kefas's argument was that these interventions had strengthened the relationship between Taraba residents and the Federal Government.

The political significance of his declaration, however, extends beyond policy discussions.

The 2027 presidential election is already shaping political calculations across Nigeria.

The ruling APC is working to consolidate support in states and regions where it hopes to improve its electoral performance, while opposition parties and political coalitions are seeking to challenge the President's re-election bid.

Governors occupy particularly important positions in these calculations because of their influence over state political structures.

A governor who openly supports a presidential candidate can provide significant organisational advantages through party mobilisation, local networks and campaign coordination.

Kefas's declaration therefore places Taraba within the APC's growing political campaign framework.

The governor also described himself as the political leader of the APC in Taraba.

That position gives him responsibility for coordinating the party's activities in the state and building support for APC candidates at different levels.

His commitment to Tinubu's re-election could therefore be expected to influence the direction of the party's campaign in Taraba.

However, translating political declarations into actual electoral results is a different challenge.

Nigeria's elections are determined by voters, and political support declared by a governor does not automatically guarantee that all voters in the state will support the same candidate.

Taraba has a diverse population with different political interests, ethnic communities and local political structures.

Opposition parties will therefore continue to compete for support in the state.

The APC will have to build its grassroots organisation and convince voters that the Federal Government's policies have produced sufficient benefits to justify another mandate.

Kefas's declaration gives the party a strong starting point, but the eventual electoral outcome will depend on a combination of national issues, local politics, candidate appeal, economic conditions and voter turnout.

The governor's decision to publicly endorse Tinubu also demonstrates how political relationships between state governors and the Federal Government can evolve.

Cooperation between Abuja and state governments can influence access to federal projects, development programmes and political resources.

Governors often need to maintain working relationships with the Federal Government regardless of party affiliation because many major national programmes require coordination between the two levels of government.

For Kefas, joining the APC has provided a formal political framework for such cooperation.

The governor's comments suggest that he believes the relationship has produced tangible benefits for Taraba.

The declaration also comes amid growing attention to the political future of governors who have changed party affiliations ahead of 2027.

Kefas is not the only Nigerian politician involved in political realignment.

The period leading to a general election traditionally produces defections, alliances, negotiations and changes in political strategy.

The scale of current political movement has made party membership and electoral alliances major topics of national discussion.

The APC is seeking to strengthen its position as the ruling party, while opposition politicians are attempting to construct a credible alternative.

Kefas's declaration adds another state-level endorsement to the President's campaign prospects.

For Taraba, the political development could also influence the contest for elective positions at the state and federal levels.

Candidates seeking election under the APC will benefit from having the governor openly supporting the party.

At the same time, opposition parties may intensify their efforts to retain or expand their support among voters who are not persuaded by the governor's position.

The political contest in Taraba is therefore likely to become increasingly competitive as the 2027 election approaches.

The governor's remarks also underline the importance of federal-state cooperation in determining political support.

When state governments can point to visible federal projects and programmes, they may use those achievements as evidence that cooperation with the Federal Government benefits their communities.

This can become an important part of campaign messaging.

For Tinubu, endorsements from governors can strengthen the perception that his administration has broad political support across the country.

However, the President will still face the challenge of addressing economic concerns, security challenges and other issues that influence voter sentiment.

Kefas's support does not eliminate those challenges.

Rather, it gives the President another political ally who can campaign on the administration's record in a state where the ruling party hopes to consolidate its position.

The governor's comments also provide an indication of how he intends to approach the next election.

By openly declaring Taraba's support for Tinubu, he has removed much of the uncertainty surrounding his political alignment.

The statement makes clear that the governor intends to work within the APC structure and support the President's re-election campaign.

The next stage will be the mobilisation of party members and supporters across the state.

This will require meetings with local party leaders, ward structures, youth groups, women organisations and other political stakeholders.

The effectiveness of that mobilisation will ultimately determine whether the governor's declaration can translate into significant electoral support.

Political observers will also watch how opposition parties respond.

The opposition is likely to challenge the governor's assessment of the Federal Government's performance and present its own arguments to voters.

Issues such as the cost of living, employment, security, education, healthcare and infrastructure will remain central to the political debate.

Voters will ultimately make their decisions based on their own assessment of these issues.

The governor's endorsement therefore represents an important political development, but not a final verdict on the 2027 election.

The meeting between Kefas and Tinubu also demonstrates the increasing frequency with which political leaders are holding consultations ahead of the election.

Such meetings allow governors and national leaders to coordinate political strategies and discuss development priorities.

For Taraba, the relationship could potentially lead to further federal support for projects and programmes in the state.

For the APC, the governor's commitment provides an opportunity to strengthen its structure in a state where the party has historically faced strong competition.

For President Tinubu, the endorsement adds another governor to the growing list of political leaders publicly aligning themselves with his re-election campaign.

The President's eventual electoral strategy will depend on how effectively these state-level relationships can be converted into grassroots support.

The political environment will also continue to evolve as other candidates and parties announce their plans.

With 2027 approaching, voters are likely to hear competing promises and policy proposals from presidential candidates and political parties.

The APC will seek to campaign on the achievements of the Tinubu administration, while opposition candidates will focus on areas where they believe the government has fallen short.

Taraba will be part of that national contest.

Governor Kefas's declaration ensures that the state government will campaign from the APC platform.

The governor's position also sends a message to political actors in Taraba that the state leadership has chosen a clear direction for the next election cycle.

Whether that direction is embraced fully by voters will become clearer as campaigns intensify.

For now, Kefas is presenting his support for Tinubu as a reflection of what he described as the benefits residents have received from the Federal Government.

His emphasis on security, education, healthcare and infrastructure provides the foundation for the political argument he is making on behalf of the President.

The coming months will determine whether the APC can turn that argument into broader voter support.

The political significance of the governor's declaration is nevertheless immediate.

A sitting governor and state party leader has publicly committed his political structure to the re-election of the incumbent President.

That gives the APC another important foothold in its preparations for 2027.

It also confirms that the political realignment in Nigeria is continuing, with governors and other senior politicians positioning themselves well before the formal election campaign reaches its peak.

For President Tinubu and the APC, the challenge now is to maintain and strengthen the support being declared by political leaders.

For Governor Kefas, the challenge will be to demonstrate to Taraba voters that the alliance with the Federal Government delivers tangible benefits for the state.

Ultimately, the electorate will decide whether those arguments are persuasive when Nigerians go to the polls in 2027.
